History of the 'Hôtel de l'Univers'

The Jesuits arrived in Arras in 1600 at the request of the town's burghers and founded the Arras College on 8 April 1603.
Twnety-one houses were bought and demolished to make way for a vast and airy convent complex, including a church, mill, infirmary, brewery and college. The work lasted from 1604 to 1609.

Transformed into a hospital during the French Revolution, it became a hotel and post office from 1830 onwards.

The 'Hôtel de l'Univers' was built on part of the Jesuit College, and the residence to the left of the hotel is the Prior's house.
